Common Types of Vaginal Infections
Vaginal infections, also called vaginitis, occur in the condition of imbalance in the vaginal environment. There are many types of infections can affect the vagina, each with its symptoms and causes. Below are the most common types:
1. Bacterial Vaginosis (BV)
Symptoms: itching, burning, white, thin, or greyish discharge.
Causes: more development of dangerous bacteria that disturb the balance of vaginal flora.
2. Vaginal Candidiasis (Yeast Infection)
Symptoms: intense itching, Thick, white, “cottage cheese-like” discharge, redness and swelling, pain during urination or sex.
Cause: Overgrowth of Candida, a small amount of yeast that naturally lives in the vagina.
3. Trichomoniasis
Symptoms: Frothy, itching, burning, yellow-green vaginal discharge with a strong odor, discomfort during sex or urination.
Cause: A transmitted infection during sex can be caused by the parasite Trichomonas vaginalis.
4. Chlamydia and Gonorrhea
Cause: bacterial infections due to sex.
Symptoms: Often mild or no symptoms, can include bleeding between abnormal discharge, periods, or pelvic pain.
5. Viral Vaginitis
Cause: human papillomavirus (HPV), Herpes simplex virus (HSV).
Symptoms: Painful blisters (HSV) or sores, abnormal cell changes in the cervix (HPV).
6. Non-infectious vaginitis
Cause: Irritation from chemicals in detergents, soaps, allergies, or feminine hygiene products.
Symptoms: burning, Itching, or discharge without signs of infection.
